The Practice Profile

Background


Shanklin Medical Centre serves the population of a small, thriving, seaside and semi-rural town on the south east side of the Isle of Wight.


The partnership was originally formed in 1968. The building is owned by the partners and has undergone a number of improvements over the years including a major extension and lift installation, completed in March 2010.


The practice serves a population of some 11,500 patients. This number has grown slowly but steadily over the years. There is a higher than average proportion of patients ages 65 and over, and an associated increased prevalence of chronic medical problems. This along with relatively large individual list sizes means that there is a high demand for medical services. The practice has responded to this with the development of a constantly evolving and well managed systematic approach to health care with an emphasis on involvement of all members of the "team".


We provide a service to a large number of holidaymakers during the summer months.


The philosophy of the practice is simply to provide the highest possible standard of medical care to the practice population.


 


The Practice


We strongly believe that the success of the practice both as a business and a provider of excellent medical care depends on the quality and commitment of everyone who works here. The practice team relies on clinical leadership from the doctors and our senior nurses. The practice manager provides non-clinical leadership. We strongly believe in supporting and empowering all members of the team to take responsibility and ownership for the areas in which they work. We welcome innovation and initiative. We look to provide a friendly and supportive environment in which to work which in turn leads to delivery of a service which we believe all our practice team are proud to be part of.


We have developed team structures within the practice. These are nursing, reception/secretarial and clerical/data capture. These teams are managed by the practice manager who is accountable to the partners.


The partners and the practice manager meet weekly. Meetings are set with clear agendas to deal with all the challenges and developments we face. We aim to maintain a positive attitude in the face of running a service which often seems to be influenced by national and local political initiatives.


The practice aspires to meeting the requirements of nGMS in full.


We are the only practice on the Island and one of few nationwide to have achieved 100% of the Clinical QOF standards every year since inception. We aim to keep up to this exemplary standard. The practice therefore has a good reputation locally and we are often held up as an example of good practice.


The clinical team is supported by a comprehensive IT system that uses TPP SystmOne. Shanklin Medical Centre moved to this system in April 2016 have previously has used INPS Vision since 1988. All clinical data is captured at source and all historical data is recorded. The data capture team is well trained and competent in scanning and data processing.


We are committed to supporting all our staff in an on-going education and training program.


The practice is situated centrally in the town making access easy. We believe that it is important to make the practice a pleasant environment for patients and staff alike and look to continually invest in the fabric of the building. The installation of a lift has allowed us to exploit the upstairs space to the full. We have also commissioned local artists to produce art pieces for the waiting and walk through areas and we have also completely refurbished our reception area and installed an automated check-in system to help reduce queues.
